With spring in full force and summer just around the corner, now is as good a time as any to get some spring cleaning done in your Sebastian, FL workplace. Here is a simple checklist to get you started:

  • Filing-It is good practice to file away last year’s documents and create new folders for the current year. Now is also a good time to go through the office and collect any unfiled documents to sort and put away.
  • Organize supplies- We recommend organizing your office supplies into one area. This makes it easy for your employees to find things and will also help with inventory control.

However, there are still ways you can help! Below are some creative cheap, even free, ways to continue giving back.

  • Share a cause on social media- Social media is a huge platform and a great way to spread the word on a cause you believe in. Even if you can’t afford to donate, you never know if the next person can. A simple “share” can make a big difference!
  • Donate your time-Time is priceless and we all have it. Even if it’s just an hour or two you can make a huge impact in the community in a short period.
  • Volunteer any unique skills-There is always someone in need of a service or item, if you have a unique skill consider donating your services to help.
  • Donate unwanted items-There are charities and organizations in our community that need all kinds of items. Before you toss unwanted items to the curb, consider if they can be donated!
  • Donate blood-There are OneBlood donation centers that are always looking for blood donors. If you are a medically viable donor you can consider helping by donating!

Different Types of Mold

1/30/2022 (Permalink)

Mold found growing behind kitchen cabinet Mold colonies can often be difficult to find. SERVPRO of Vero Beach is experienced in finding the source of loss no matter how well hidden.

Mold growth can occur under several different circumstances, depending on the type of fungi in question. Before you begin your mold remediation process, you should identify which species is the culprit. Below is a description of the 5 main types of mold:

  1. Stachybotrys
More commonly referred to as the infamous black mold, Stachybotrys is perhaps the most common type of residential mold. Much like the name implies, it has a dark green or black color and may feel slimy to the touch. It's very common in places that come into frequent contact with water, or in areas that have recently suffered some form of water damage.
  2. Alternaria
This species of mold is often confused for black mold, as it thrives under the same damp or high humidity conditions, has a very similar appearance and is just about as common as its cousin. Instead of feeling slimy, alternaria has an almost velvety texture due to the wispy dark green or brown hairs that sprout on its surface.
  3. Chaetomium
Once again, this type of mold growth is quite common in water-damaged structures. When it first appears, it boasts a white or gray color before slowly fading to dark brown or black over time. You're more likely to smell this species before you see it, due to its musty odor.
  4. Aureobasidium
You should check for this type of fungus behind your wallpaper or on painted wooden surfaces. This mold appears pink or brown in color when it's young and slowly fades to black over time, much like chaetomium.
  5. Cladosporium
This versatile species of mold can thrive in both warm and cold environments. You're most likely to find it growing in your carpeting, upholstery, and other types of fabrics. It boasts a soft, suede-like texture and green coloring.

The Four Components of Water Damage Assessment

9/24/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO technician taking moisture readings on a jobsite. Our technicians utilize various techniques and equipment to take accurate moisture readings.

Upon arrival to a water loss, our technicians perform an initial assessment to determine the damage done to the property. This reduces the cost of your insurance claim by preventing the unnecessary replacement of repairable damage. You should expect the assessment to consist of these four steps:

  1. Inspection of Damage-The associate assesses how much damage the water has

caused, inspecting the affected areas to determine whether restoration or replacement will be needed. Additionally, the professional will check for any dangers in the area, such as lead, asbestos and unsafe electrical outlets.

  1. Addressing Ongoing Leaks-If there is still water leaking on the property, it is

necessary to identify the source and stop its flow. The associate should check for any sources of contamination of the water as well.

  1. Testing the Water-Pretesting involves classifying the water contamination into one of three categories:
    • White Water – Water with no substantial contaminants
    • Gray Water – Water containing microorganisms, as found in septic water
    • Black Water – Water containing dangerous bacteria or fungi
  2. Preparing the Area for Water Removal- Before moving forward in the restoration process, the area needs to be cleared of any furniture or carpets in the way and subject to water damage.

Once the inspection has been completed, your property is ready for restoration. SERVPRO of Vero Beach is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for all your water damage restoration needs.

Three Reasons to Choose SERVPRO of Vero Beach to Handle a Catastrophic Loss

9/15/2021 (Permalink)

Several Franchise Locations
SERVPRO has over 1,700 franchise locations. This means that the closest professionals can arrive on site in four hours or less, which may be faster than other regional mitigation and restoration services. In the event of widespread damage from fires, flooding or storm damage, additional experts and equipment may report from nearby locations to assist in the cleanup and repairs.

National Corporate Support
The support of one of the nation's leading mitigation and restoration companies allows the local franchises to be better trained and equipped than most independent companies. Insurance jobs are only offered to locations that satisfy all the requirements of a 21-point Participation Agreement. This oversight and company-wide services such as the Claims Information Center elevate the standard of service and make SERVPRO the perfect choice in the event of catastrophic loss.

Industry-Leading Standards
This national corporation is also a certified training school for the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration. Each franchise must employ at least one technician who specializes in a particular area such as storm or fire damage to maintain certification. The IICRC requires technicians to obtain continuing education credits to ensure that professionals keep up with current best practices in the mitigation and restoration field. This means that the work performed by these employees will be up to the highest standards in the industry.

Why Should You Have Your Vero Beach Home Professionally Cleaned for Selling?

3/1/2021 (Permalink)

Man using a rotary cleaner to buff floors. Survey suggests that every 7 out of 10 people say that they have no time available to clean their properties. Let us help alleviate some stress!

With interest rates for home mortgages hitting record lows in the last few months, this a great time for homeowners to sell their homes. One thing a seller should keep in mind when selling is to give their property a thorough cleaning. Along other advice, seasoned realtors will encourage their clients to keep their home in immaculate condition to increase market value and reduce “list to sale” conversion times.

Realtors commonly hear the response, “But I’m very tidy, I clean my home all the time.”. While that may be true, a professional deep cleaning can go way further than most people would imagine.

For example, a prospective buyer loves the look of a home, but is allergic to pet dander and dust in the air ducts making it necessary to do a deep cleaning.  Fortunately, SERVPRO of Vero Beach offers comprehensive cleaning solutions to make your sale quick and clean. Give our office a buzz at 772-770-0501 to discuss how we can help get your home sold faster!

Home Heating Safety in your Indian River County Home

12/10/2020 (Permalink)

graphic showing a space heater in a living room, with safety tips Space heaters account for 80% of home heating fire deaths annual. Here are a few extra safety tips when using a space heater.

In Florida even our coolest winters are mild in relative comparison to the rest of the country. However, as temperatures begin to drop this month many will be giving their A/C’s a break and switching to heaters. Heaters are one of the leading causes of fires during the winter months. The NFPA recommends the following safety precautions when using heating equipment:

  • Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment such as a portable space heater, fireplace, wood-burning stove or furnace. The three-foot safety zone includes furniture, drapes, electronics—anything that can burn.
  • Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.
  • Never use your oven to heat your home.
  • Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.
  • Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Never plug a space heater into a power strip or “multi-plug.” They should be plugged directly into an outlet.
  • Do not overload extension cords or outlets and do not place an electrical cord under a rug. Dispose of older, fraying extension cords.
  • Always use only the type of fuel specified by the manufacturer for fuel burning space heaters.
  • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
  • Do not burn Christmas tree branches, treated wood, or wrapping paper in a home fireplace.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly.

A professionally cleaned carpet and furniture may make all the difference in brightening up a room and freshening up your home.

How to Clean Faux Christmas Trees

12/2/2020 (Permalink)

Hands holding a wash cloth while wiping a Christmas tree branch down. According to the American Christmas Tree Association roughly 80% of the trees set up annually are artificial.

The Holiday Season is now in full swing! Christmas is just around the corner and one of our favorite parts of the holiday is setting up the Christmas tree. Many artificial trees can look and smell dusty after spending 11 months stored away.  Below are our cleaning recommendations to give your tree new life.

  • Dust- If your tree can tolerate it, remove larger loose particles of dust using a vacuum cleaner with attachment. If not, use a static cling cloth (like the Swiffer Duster) to gently glide across the branches.
  • Wet Wipe- After you have removed the excess dust fill a bucket with warm water and a small amount of dish soap. Use a soft cloth or sponge to carefully wipe each branch down.
  • Deodorization- After you have given your tree a good wipe down you can add deodorizing sticks specifically designed to hide in your Christmas Tree. They come in a wide variety of scents but our favorite is “Oh, Christmas Tree”.

Sometimes, home cleaning just doesn't cut it. For more extensive cleaning services on your tree or around your home SERVPRO of Vero Beach is here to help!

Safety Tips for Deep Frying Turkeys

11/18/2020 (Permalink)

Woman dipping a turkey into a deep fryer Fun Fact: Deep fried turkeys have existed since the 1930’s however they gained more popularity a in 1996 after Martha Stuart featured a fried turkey.

As mentioned in the previous post, Thanksgiving is the peak day for fires. We went over some basic safety to avoid kitchen fires. However, a growing trend during Thanksgiving is to deep fry turkeys--it produces a unique experience to this holiday’s traditional bird. This method does pose a higher risk for fires though. Below are some key safety tips to implement when deep frying your turkey:

  • Turkey fryers can easily tip over spilling hot oil across a large area. Use your turkey fryer only outdoors on a sturdy, level surface well away from things that can burn. Make sure to have a “3-foot kid- and pet-free zone” around your turkey fryer to protect against burn injuries.
  • An overfilled cooking pot will cause oil to spill over when the turkey is placed inside. Determine the correct amount of oil needed by first placing the turkey in the pot with water.
  • A partially frozen turkey will cause hot oil to splatter. Make sure your turkey is completely thawed before you fry it.
  • Turkey fryers can easily overheat and start a fire. Check the temperature often with a cooking thermometer so the oil won’t overheat.
  • The pot, lid and handles of a turkey fryer can get dangerously hot and cause burn injuries. Use long cooking gloves that protect hands and arms when you handle these items.

The Difference Between “Mitigation” and “Restoration”

11/11/2020 (Permalink)

Alarm clock with “24:07” on the left and the SERVPRO logo on the right. We are available to help 24 hours a day, 7 days week!

If you have contacted SERVPRO of Vero Beach it is highly likely your property has been affected by water, fire, or mold. During the remediation process you will hear the words “mitigation” and “restoration” thrown around a lot. Without fully understanding what each word means it is easy to assume they are essentially the same. However, they serve to describe two very different stages in the process. Here’s a quick breakdown of what they mean.

“Mitigation” is the first portion of the process when it comes to water, fire, or mold damage—to include stabilizing the situation before any more damage can occur. Some examples of mitigation include taking assessment of the damage, packing salvageable contents, extracting water, cleaning soot, following mold protocols, and setting up applicable equipment. Depending on the scope of the mitigation, restoration will come into play after the mitigation has been completed.

“Restoration” means that SERVPRO of Vero Beach will bring your property back to the state it was in before the damage occurred. Some examples include replacing the materials removed during mitigation such as flooring, cabinetry, and drywall. Our goal is to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Woman's hands tying bow on a present Blessed to be a Blessing

Here at SERVPRO of Vero Beach we teamed up with The Buggy Bunch once again and had the privilege of sponsoring a family for Christmas as a Christmas Angel. The Buggy Bunch hand-picked families that they closely work with on a monthly basis and chose ones that were well deserving. We received a Christmas wish list from our family and we bought them toys, clothes hygiene products and more essentials. We wrapped each gift up in beautiful wrapping paper and delivered them to the Buggy Bunch office before Christmas. The mother thanked us and the Buggy Bunch for everything believing that her kids will now have a good Christmas. She said that she has a hope and a future to look forward to. Just hearing that makes it all worth it! We are blessed to be a blessing.

Clean as a Whistle | Power Washing

12/9/2019 (Permalink)

man wearing suit pressure washing an exterior wall of a building Pressure Washing

Pressure washing is one of those things that is needed more often than we think but we don’t realize it until an area is partially washed and it is compared with an unwashed area. Then the grime, dirt and mess glaringly stare back at you.

You can pay for someone to pressure wash your home or you can purchase a pressure washer and do it yourself. While there are pros and cons to each, if you choose to DIY, make sure you keep your safety in mind. It can be a dangerous task to pressure wash if the spray is aimed in the wrong direction. The force can cause a potential laceration, bruise or puncture.

Why pressure wash?

Pressure washing regularly is beneficial because it prevents future damage, protects your family’s health from mold and mildew and holds your property value.

We highly recommend staying up-to- date on pressure washing, especially since its such an easy thing to do.

Apple pie with a slice cut out Thanksgiving Pie

Why SERVPRO? Because we love giving back to our community! We love being a helping hand for those who need it. This week we had the opportunity to partner up with the local Buggy Bunch and Pies for a Purpose. The Buggy Bunch's mission is to build relationships with the moms and families and to help equip them with programs and services. Pies For a Purpose raises money to support family programming and donates hundreds of pies to charitable organizations.

Through the organization Pies For a Purpose we bought 30 pies and met up with the Buggy Bunch ladies to deliver them to the Hibiscus Children's Center. At the center they maintain a safe shelter for children who are abused, abandoned and neglected in our city.

We enjoyed contributing for Thanksgiving and look forward to partnering with more organizations in the near future.

Stay by the Fire as Florida Temperatures Drop

12/3/2019 (Permalink)

fire pit in open valley with chairs surrounding Warm Fires on Chilly Nights

Vero Beach and surrounding areas have finally dropped in temperature, from hot and muggy summer days we've entered into cooler and crisp mornings. This is a rare occasion so you will most definitely see all Floridians bundled up in sweaters and boots. Now is the great time to have social events outside by the fire, where you won't be pestered by mosquitoes and bugs alike.

Fire pits are so much fun to gather around and sing songs, make s’mores and keep warm but along with fun always comes safety!

Light a fire only in open spaces- keep clear from nearby buildings and foliage.

Always keep a close eye on all children, make sure they keep a safe distance from the flames.

Don’t pour gas on a fire. There are so many unfortunate stories that stem from doing this.

Be safe and have fun & enjoy this cooler weather!

Storm Approaches : Sold Out Generators

11/22/2019 (Permalink)

Red and black generator Generator Needed

Why SERVPRO? We care about our community, our customers, and fulfilling their needs. We desire to give our community tips and safety procedures, even from our website!

Today, we are going to discuss the importance of having a generator. Before a storm strikes, which happens often in Florida, you want to always be prepared well beforehand. One way is to invest in a generator. Once you lose power, you realize how many things you use on a moment to moment basis, and then all of a sudden you can’t use any of it…that is, unless you have a generator.

Why use a generator?

First of all, a generator is portable power, so it can make your appliances, lights and electricity run. It provides power to your fridge and freezer, which is very important because food can spoil within hours if it is no longer being cooled. Generators can also be important if you work from home, as many people do nowadays. Smaller generators are also very handy for power tools and even camping if there are no available nearby outlets.

We hope you look into purchasing a generator from your local hardware store.

Ladder Safety | Common Mistakes

10/21/2019 (Permalink)

Silver metal ladder propped against a white wall Ladder Safety

When working on your home and projects, you often have to use a ladder to hang things, take stuff down or even go on a roof. We want you to always remain safe and use caution when doing things like these. It is recorded that 164,000 people receive emergency room treatment from ladder-related injuries and there are 300 deaths every year. We’ve compiled a short list of tips to be aware of when using a ladder-

  • Choose the right ladder

Every ladder is different in the type, material and weight capacity

  • Factor in the height

You’ll never want to stand on your tippy toes or bend over to reach your work area. Select a ladder that reaches perfect height in order to maintain safety.

  • Secure on a good surface

Make sure the surface isn’t slick or uneven- never secure on a bed of rocks or mulch, plastic sheets or wet grounds.

  • Never stand on top cap

On every ladder, there’s a step that is labeled as the highest level and if you advance above it, the ladder will become unstable and most likely fall.

Your safety matters! Use these tips to ensure that you are properly using a ladder and always read the instructions.

We Take Care of Our Customer's Valuables

Pile of customer's furniture placed in center of room, covered in a white tarp Furniture Covered in Tarp

We recently got an emergency call from a home in Grand Harbor along the Indian River. No one had been living in the home for some time, so when there was a leak in a pipe within the foundation, no one was there to stop it. Once it was discovered, there was water all over the floors.

The crew sloshed in their boots, examining the damage that had taken place. The furniture was wet and the rugs were drenched in water, the bedroom carpet was completely ruined.

Drywall had to be cut out and cabinets had to be removed. But before remediation begins in any home, our crew carefully places all the furniture that is still in good condition to the center of the room. They then place a tarp, sealing it tight with tape, over all the furniture. This protects it and a keeps it in good condition.

Duct Cleaning

Return vent on ceiling in house opened up after duct cleaning Clean vents

Does there seem to be dust reappearing throughout your home? Is your family catching allergies? Can you smell bad odors and desire to have a fresh smelling home?

It is most likely time for a duct cleaning!

WHY?

Ducts circulate the air flow from your heating and cooling equipment throughout your home to ensure it is properly conditioned at all times. The process involves removing the dust and contaminants that exist within the ductwork in every space throughout your home. Our air duct cleaning involves powerful vacuums that pull dust and debris from deep within, preventing it from moving and circulating throughout your home.

These are the steps we take when we perform a duct cleaning:

  1. Locate return vent for AC system
  2. Make cardboard with hole for vent tube
  3. Go to each vent in house, remove, and clean them with water and soap
  4. Vacuum out vents with backpack vacuum, wipe out as far as possible with concrobium
  5. Replace all vents
  6. Hook up duct machine and tube to AC return vent
  7. Shut AC system off completely
  8. Start with one vent and remove vent tape, let machine run 3-5 minutes, replace vent tape and move to next vent. Continue throughout house until all vents have been done.
  9. Shut off machine when done with all vents, remove all tape, clean up after and leave.

Crawl Spaces

12/21/2018 (Permalink)

Crawl space of a local home.

Looking at this picture, you might be wondering what you're looking at.  It actually is the crawl space underneath a house that was overgrown with mold.  The homeowners were out of town when their dishwasher decided to leak and a week later a neighbors saw water coming out of their front door.  In just that week alone, the mold growth was massive.  In situations like this, it is not enough to only clean and dry out the home itself.  With that much water, we had to go underneath and pull out all of the insulation too that was absolutely soaked.  If we had not done this, the mold would have continued to keep coming back.  The production team is thorough and tough and never back down from a challenge.

Sloshy Mold

12/21/2018 (Permalink)

Bottles of booze found with mold growth in them.

I am the marketer for SERVPRO of Vero Beach and sometimes I will go out in the field with the production team and help out.  One particular home we did I was shocked with what I found.  I could understand mold growing in opened bottles of booze, but when I discovered mold growth in sealed bottles, it just shows you how damaging mold growth truly is.  Did you know that one million mold spores could fit on the tip of a pencil?  That really puts in perspective how imperative it is for you to call the professionals if you find mold in your home.  Call SERVPRO today.  We can answer all your questions and put your mind at ease.  We are ready to be of assistance 24/7.

Fried Mold Anyone?

12/21/2018 (Permalink)

Mold growing in a frying pan.

SERVPRO of Vero Beach loves fighting mold.  Pesky little mold spores do not stand a chance against us.  We know how to eradicate and restore.  We also know how to prevent and educate.  We are a brand tried and true and are here to serve our community household by household.  This picture is of a house we arrived at where there was not an inch of it that was not sabotaged with mold.  Jobs like these show the intensity mold will grow.  Every single cabinet, every single room, and every single drawer we opened had mold growing in it.  Do not fret, just call us and we will come make it "Like it never even happened."  We know where to look and how to eradicate.

Mold Will Grow Anywhere!

12/10/2018 (Permalink)

Mold found on, in, and around a refrigerator.

As seen in the picture, mold will even sneak into compressed spaces like the tight fit of refrigerators.  I was amazed the first time I opened a cupboard and saw how the mold had deposited a colony in between plates.  Did you know that  a million mold spores could fit on the tip of a pencil?  We strongly recommend not disturbing a colony when you come across one for this very reason.  With one swipe, you have now caused however many million spores to enter the air and are free to deposit in the next space they land in.  And trust me, there is not a space they won't land on.  They even can get into sealed areas.  Call the professionals instead, you won't regret it!

Garage Barrage

12/4/2018 (Permalink)

Water heater malfunctioned in this local home.

When the water heater in this Vero Beach home malfunctioned, not only did it flood the garage, but it had also seeped inside the home.  When a home has many boxes of content, it makes it a little more time consuming to go through each one, but is a must so the items in the boxes can dry properly.  Throughout the years at SERVPRO, I have discovered going through all my storage boxes before an emergency can occur is the best option because then I can go through them at my leisure.  It is often sad to see a client already in distress because a pipe burst at 3 A.M., have to go through boxes of content and sort them out at that hour.

Due Diligence Always

12/4/2018 (Permalink)

Hidden root behind the drywall.

At SERVPRO, we do not skip corners or steps.  We make sure to find the root cause and our goal is to always make it "Like it never even happened."  Sometimes, a root cause is not always visible to the naked eye, so we at SERVPRO of Vero Beach use the most efficient, up to date technology to find the source.  This allows us to find the cause of loss with the most minimal amount of damage.  Since the source was behind drywall, we were able to locate the exact spot before having to cut into the wall.  Most clients are grateful for this. Many homeowners would prefer not having to see multiple holes in their walls especially if it all could be avoided to begin with.
