Why You Should Purchase a Generator for Your Vero Beach, FL Business

2/14/2022 (Permalink)

a stock image of a commercial generator Commercial generators come in all sizes to provide sufficient power to buildings of all sizes.

Most of the time, you won't have to worry about the power going off in your Vero Beach, FL business. However, if you ever do lose electricity, you should have a backup source to keep the lights on and things running smoothly in the office. A generator is the ideal solution.

Common Causes of Power Outages

  • Flooding
  • Fires
  • Storm surges
  • Earthquakes
  • Malfunctions with the city's grid system

How Generators Work
When the power goes out, your generator should automatically kick on and provide the electricity you need to run your business. The machine runs on either diesel fuel, solar power or natural gas.

Lifespan
Most quality generators should last for between 3,000 and 5,000 hours. This will depend on how often you use the device and how well you take care of it. Proper storage and maintenance are critical to extending its usefulness.

If you don't have a generator in your building now is a good time to get one. This device could keep your company running when there is a power outage in your workplace.

Why You Should Carry Insurance for Your Commercial Property

1/30/2022 (Permalink)

water damage on floor of commercial building SERVPRO of Vero Beach is available 24/7 for all your commercial remediation and restoration needs!

Having insurance can benefit your business in several ways, particularly if you have experienced water, fire, or mold damage in your building. The following are a few reasons why you should consider getting a policy.

  1. Damage Can Be Extensive

Whether it is from broken pipes, a leaky roof or a storm-damage from water can be extensive. It can cause quite a bit of secondary damage as well, such as mold growth and warped or rotting materials. Along with the structure of your building, it can affect the belongings inside. Having repairs done by a cleanup and restoration service and replacing equipment can cost a lot of money. If you do not have insurance, you will most likely need to pay for this on your own.

  1. You Might Lose Profits

If your building is damaged, you will need to have work done. Depending on the amount of water cleanup and repairs required, you could be unable to do business as usual for an extended period. This can have a negative effect on your company’s profits. In some cases, business insurance can help with this. They may be able to provide finances based on this loss.

  1. It Can Protect You Against Liability Claims

If water damage or some other type of accident causes someone to get hurt on your property, they may decide to make a claim against you. Not only can this be a frustrating experience, but it can also cost you money. If you have insurance, this can help reduce your costs if you are found liable.

While you may think that business insurance is just another unnecessary expense, it can be incredibly useful to your company. You cannot predict everything that will happen, and insurance can keep you from losing a lot of money in the event of water damage or other emergencies.

Got Mold in Your Vero Beach, FL Commercial Property?

1/18/2022 (Permalink)

Mold and mushroom colony on ceiling Here you can see where mushrooms began to grow out of a mold colony on a ceiling.

Mold has a distinctive odor. You may notice a mold smell or mildew smell before you see any visible growth. These smells are caused by the volatile organic compounds released during fungus growth. Here are three steps that owners of commercial properties should take immediately after smelling mold.

1. Identify Potential Sources of Moisture

Mold cannot grow without moisture. If you notice a moldy odor, consider potential moisture sources. This may lead you straight to the location of mold growth. Mold may begin to grow after water damage resulting from a leak or flood. Fungus thrives in undisturbed areas prone to developing condensation or that have high humidity levels. A mold testing expert can use a thermal camera to identify the origin of moisture that is causing mold.

2. Look for Visible Mold

By the time you pick up on a mold smell, you may be able to see colonies. Do not disturb fungus growth, as this may spread spores and lead to certain health effects. Rely on the expertise of an industrial hygienist and mold mitigation professionals to find hidden mold. These specialists can perform controlled and precise testing to check for mold behind walls or in other hidden locations.

3. Hire Mold Testing and Mitigation Experts

If you notice a fungus smell, but see no signs of mold, contact a service that provides mold testing and mitigation. Experts can determine the causes and types of mold in a commercial structure, eliminate the growth, and lower moisture levels to prevent the problem from recurring.

Check for moisture and visible mold as soon as you notice a mold smell in your Vero Beach, FL commercial property. If you do not find any signs of mold, contact a mold testing and mitigation service to look for hidden growth or moisture sources and ensure that the issue is resolved.

What to Do if Your Sprinkler System Accidentally Discharges

1/6/2022 (Permalink)

Automatic fire sprinkler system during discharge This is a good visual for how much water can be released in a small area from an automatic fire sprinkler system.

Automatic fire sprinkler systems are considered one of the most effective tools for protecting property and lives from a fire. While this type of sprinkler system brings a lot of reassurance it is important to understand that fire sprinkler heads respond individually to a number of things including: heat, corrosion, mechanical damage, and sabotage/vandalism.  Accidental discharges can become somewhat of a burden. In the case of an accidental discharge follow these tips below:

Shut Off Water Immediately

Shut off the water supply to the fire sprinkler system as soon as you can.  The faster you can turn the water off the less potential for major water damage you have.  Be aware that it will take a couple moments to stop, the water has to clear the lines first.

Mitigate Future Damage

You will want to clear as much as possible from the affected area so mitigate further damage.  Move furniture, valuables, and equipment to a safe dry area to limit exposure and further damage.

Call Your Insurance Company

You will want to call your insurance agent as soon as you can to find out what steps to take next and the claims process.  Also, so they can send someone to assess the situation and damage.  Their assessment will determine who is responsible for the damage.

Call SERVPRO of Vero Beach

Call a restoration company that specializes in water damage like SERVPRO of Vero Beach to help mitigate and restore the area. SERVPRO is a much better choice than DIY because we are trained in disaster cleanup and ready to help when you need us.

Storm Safety for Your Vero Beach, FL Business

9/20/2021 (Permalink)

Drying equipment laid out in warehouse We are prepared for any size disaster with a warehouse full of drying equipment.

There are measures you can take to prepare your business well before a storm hits. Routine inspections of your building and grounds can help you find and address any potential issues that may lead to leaks and damage during a storm. Keep your property up to code and well-maintained to limit the impacts of severe weather. You should keep landscaping in good order and regularly trim trees that pose a risk to your structures. You can buy surge protectors, lightning rods, or a lightning protection system to protect your electronic devices. An intense rain storm can lead to a power outage, so have an emergency preparedness kit on-site. During inclement weather, it is important to use the safety practices you have developed to keep yourself and your employees safe. You should choose a safe place in your building for team members to gather during a thunderstorm. Pick a place that is away from skylights, windows, and glass doors as these items can be damaged or broken during high winds. As electricity can travel through plumbing and phone lines, advise your employees to avoid running water and using landline phones during bad storms.

Recovering from a major storm can be overwhelming. You should contact SERVPRO of Vero Beach if your business has been impacted by a severe rain storm and high winds.

Preparing Your Vero Beach, FL Business for Holiday

6/2/2021 (Permalink)

Image of surf on beach with “out of office” carved into the sand. SERVPRO of Vero Beach offers free “Emergency Ready Plans” for all Indian River County businesses. An ERP could help save vital time in the event of a

As snowbirds return home, many Vero Beach businesses will be closing for part or all of the summer months. Making sure your commercial property is safe from potential water damage is vital. Without anyone there to immediately act on an issue that requires water pipe repair, a flooding problem can spiral out of control. Following these three tips can make coming back from a leisurely break to a flooded workplace less likely.

  • Check the Water Supply Lines: Everything that uses water should be inspected. Items such as toilets, refrigerators, sinks, fountains, dishwashers, ice makers, and washing machines all have water lines and should be evaluated. With a flashlight, check the attached cords for cracks or breaks. If you see any problems, turn that specific shutoff valve off and arrange for water pipe repair when you are back.
  • Turn Off the Main Valve Before Leaving: If you have access, it is important to turn off the main valve to the water supply. In an older commercial property, there is a gate valve that must be rotated until the gate it controls is fully down. In newer properties, there is a ball valve with a lever that needs to be turned 90 degrees to the “off position” when it is not turned the same way as the pipe. Shutting down the main valve will stop looming problems regardless. When your business opens again, you can resume being vigilant of any leaks after turning it back on.
  • Inspect the Outside of the Property: The building’s downspout should be free of any debris to stop rainwater or snow melt from causing water damage. A simple check keeps the mechanism working towards keeping your business not flooded.

Water damage is scary, but it can be mitigated. If prevention isn’t adequate or water pipe repair is necessary upon return, reach out to trained professionals at SERVPRO of Vero Beach. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

  • Some things to consider include making sure your insurance protection is current and will cover losses.
  • Employees can be a big asset if they are trained in what steps to take during a power outage. Knowledgeable employees will also increase the safety of customers.

A Comprehensive Fire Loss Plan for Your Vero Beach Business

12/15/2020 (Permalink)

Yellow tape in front of fire damaged building that says “Fire Line Do Not Cross”. SERVPRO of Vero Beach provides services to prevent further damage to your commercial property.

It pays to have a comprehensive plan in place in case a commercial fire damage strikes your Vero Beach, FL business. A complete fire damage plan includes the following elements:

  • A quick response from fire remediation specialists
  • Action to secure the building from looters
  • Equipment in place to deal with water removal
  • A dry-cleaning strategy for uniforms and other fabrics
  • The storage of contents
  • The restoration of the building

After a fire sweeps through your commercial building, there is likely to be some structural damage. You can also expect some degree of smoke and soot damage. This will need to be addressed using specialized equipment before the building will be functional again. For fabric articles, such as clothing and draperies, dry-cleaning is the most effective approach. Dry cleaning removes smoke odors and cleans away soot. For non-porous items, ultrasonic measures typically provide the best cleaning.

Another immediate concern will be to remove the excess moisture from the building. This can result from built in sprinkler systems and the efforts of fire-fighting crews. This is a critical task to prevent mold from growing in the building. Water removal will also help with retaining the viability of electrical equipment such as computer software and hardware.

Relying on a well thought out plan is the quickest way to recover after a commercial fire. Call SERVPRO of Vero Beach at 772-770-0501 to get your plan started today!

  • Moving furniture to change traffic patterns
  • Using walk-off mats to limit the amount of soil tracked onto the carpet
  • Regular carpet cleanings, usually once or twice a year depending on traffic levels.

Most of these maintenance protocols can be done on your own, however it is best to use a professional company for your carpet cleanings to get maximum benefit and reduce the risk of damage. SERVPRO of Vero Beach’s carpet cleaning can address moderate and heavy soil conditions in your carpets. We offer a wide range of cleaning options depending of the quality and type of carpet. Top Causes of Commercial Fires

7/31/2020 (Permalink)

Fire men putting out a commercial fire at night. Commercial fire sprinklers can be a good investment to protect all types of businesses from fire.

Fire damage to your commercial business can be catastrophic. Regardless the nature of your business, it can mean downtime and loss of goods or property. According to the USFA commercial fires tend to start for the same reasons:

  • Electrical and Heating Malfunctions– Worn electrical cords and faulty wiring are also a major cause of commercial fires.
  • Arson- Intentional fire-setting in abandoned buildings, especially in the current economic climate, provide an easy target for fire setters. Don't let these hazards kill or injure firefighters.
  • Smoking- Even in a smoke-free building, you can't watch what your employees do all the time. It only takes one cigarette to start a fire. Many historic hotel fires, and the Sofa Super Store fire, were started by someone smoking cigarettes.
  • Improper Storage- Most fires in storage properties are not in warehouses but are in garages, barns, silos, and small outbuildings. Many fires are started when flammable materials are stored too close to a heat source.

If you discover that your business has been the site of a fire, stay calm but act quickly. Once the fire has been put out, it is important that you seek help from a fire damage restoration company. Professional technicians, who are qualified to tend to fire-damaged commercial properties, will restore your business to a healthy environment for all who enter.

Purify Your Air

11/5/2019 (Permalink)

air purifier on a table with a plant and citrus Keep it fresh and clean

Do you deal with ongoing allergies and sickness in your home? First, we recommend for you to schedule a duct cleaning. SERVPRO of Vero Beach conducts air duct cleanings, as we have written about before here. But once we take care of that for you, we also recommend investing in an air purifier. These continue the process of eliminating dust, pollen, mold, and more airborne contaminants that are not great for the well-being of your health.

Air purifiers are machines that do exactly what it sounds like- they purify the air! From one opening, it draws in air from surrounding areas, and then through multiple filters it traps contaminants and impurities and recirculates the pure air back into the room.

Here are 3 different types of filter options within air purifiers:

 1. Carbon Filters eliminate odors and reduce the amount of gaseous particles which are found in cleaning products, paint, and wood preservatives

 2. Ozone Producing cleaners increase oxygen molecules in the air which then eliminates harmful bacteria in the air.

 3. Electrostatic technology is even better because it actually attracts particles in the air by static electricity and traps them in the machine.

These three types additional filter options will cause the filters to be used more, and therefore need replacement sooner than regular filters.

Three hair salon chairs and sinks in a salon You'll be back in business in no time!

We recently received an emergency call from a hair salon located in a nearby town. They had left work the night before and everything was completely normal and put together, but things were a little different when they arrived in the morning.

When they called, they informed us that a pipe had been disconnected from the washing machine and caused water to get on the floor and walls.

One of our crews left swiftly and were on the road within four minutes of the call. They quickly inspected that the baseboards first needed to be removed. They put a fan in and began the drying process but then they tested the humidity in the building and checked that another dehumidifier had to be placed in. They extracted all the existing water and then removed all wet drywall and insulation. They monitored all the equipment for a few days and removed it when it was complete.

It seems like a long process but our guys make it quick and excellent. We want your business to be ready to go is the shortest time possible.

Tips + Tricks | Keep Your Office Fresh

9/6/2019 (Permalink)

Closeup view of a desktop with a computer, keyboard, small plant, reading glasses, and notepad and pen, stapler and phone Fresh + Clean

Your office is a place where you spend many hours of the day, so you should do your best to always keep it fresh and clean. While routine cleaning is the key to keep it fresh, there are other tips you can also follow. Keeping your area organized can lead to a more productive day and feeling better and less stressed once the day is complete.

  1. Add Fresh Plants

Having real plants in a room keeps the air fresh and is soothing for your eyes. Studies show that plants have a positive impact on employees, improving their productivity and happiness.

  1. Create a Calming and Natural Atmosphere

Open the windows often for better ventilation and allow natural light to come in. Hang nature- inspired art on the wall and put sheer curtains up to always let light in.

  1. Deodorize

Eliminate lingering musty smells with baking soda as it neutralizes , and also light a scented candle or use an essential oil diffuser to produce better smells.

  1. Thorough Cleaning

Start with a clean slate and completely clear your work area. Dust and wipe your desk down, you can even spray fabric refresher on your cubicle walls for a fresh scent. Make sure to vacuum under and around your desk and chair. Once you’ve completed all the cleaning, tackle the clutter you removed and begin to eliminate that. Ask yourself if each item is necessary and serves a good purpose. Put everything back in an organized manner, clutter free. Keep important supplies close and a trash can nearby, making sure to get rid of unwanted papers right away.

Vero Beach Commercial Flooding | Causes

7/17/2019 (Permalink)

Most business owners are not aware that there are many potential factors that could cause water damage in their property. Often times people think of a major storm that takes down power lines, floods offices and shuts down businesses for days on end. This is likely, but there are multiple, typical factors that should be brought to attention in order to prevent an accident from happening. These include:

Sprinkler Systems

Sprinkler systems that work in conjunction with fire protection are great for reducing fire damage. But if they are old or malfunctioning, they can cause property flooding and damage furniture and inventory.

Sewer Lines

Don’t let your sewer lines get backed up! The lines can easily become damaged and the contaminated black water could potentially cause health effects and ruin products.

Appliances

If an appliance is damaged and fails, it could easily pour water all over your building. If this happens at night, this would create a big disaster the next day. This is typically seen in restaurants or commercial kitchens.

Pipes and Plumbing

If a pipe bursts, serious water damage would occur throughout the plumbing system.

If you find your business building in the midst of an emergency disaster, SERVPRO of Vero Beach will get you up and running “Like it never even happened.” Call today at (772) 770-0501.

Slab leak

3/4/2019 (Permalink)

Slab leak caused flooded office and stalls.

When this business called about a slab leak, they would not have had such a big emergency, but the water started entering the attached office.  This business has stalls where horses were kept.  These stalls had to be cleaned out as well.  Yucky smells for the production team but worth it getting to work around these magnificent, beautiful animals.  The slab leak was fixed by a local company and we were able to get the office and stalls dried out within a day.  It is a good day when a business does not have to close down for the day.  We were able to work around their day and schedules.  If I didn't know any better, I would say the animals were pretty pleased too.

Boat Business with a Leak

3/4/2019 (Permalink)

Drying out a business.

As seen in this picture, it wasn't actually a boat this time that needed our services, it was their office.  After a water heater leak, the owners told us they were so glad it occurred during working hours.  This allowed them to be able to shut off the valves and minimize damage.  The water was extracted and air movers were strategically placed.  Business was not interrupted for long and they raved about that.  This company was definitely fortunate.  There are so many instances where we see the disasters occur when no one is there, making bigger messes and bigger headaches. Not that this one wasn't, but they were definitely grateful it was during working hours for sure.  Call us today with any questions.  SERVPRO of Vero Beach.

Water Line Break

Flooded Office.

The water line flooded the back storage area of this engineering firm. The standing water was already damaging shelving and stored inventory and records when we arrived. By quickly extracting the water and moving items out of harm's way we mitigated the water damage. After cleaning up the area, we strategically placed some air movers and a silicone absorbing dehumidifier capturing the remaining airborne moisture. SERVPRO of Vero Beach technicians realize that secondary water damage can be secretive as it damages electronic equipment, concrete floors which need a slow drying process, and inventory that affects the production and profitability our commercial clients. Our We're Faster To Any Size Disaster slogan offers professionalism at its highest level to our residential and commercial customers.  Don't hesitate, call us today.

Microscopic Danger : Asbestos!

8/31/2018 (Permalink)

This commercial building tested positive for asbestos.

At this property there was trace amounts of asbestos found in the ceiling. Years ago using asbestos in popcorn ceilings was a very common practice so the technicians had to be extra cautious. Before removing the asbestos contaminated popcorn ceiling the entire interior had to be completely contained so that no asbestos got onto any other surfaces.

Asbestos is a very dangerous mineral that should always be avoided. Its microscopic fibers cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted and it usually does not cause any immediate symptoms at all. Actually, symptoms may not be seen for 10-40 years after exposure to asbestos. However there are some symptoms that should be looked out for.

If you suspect you may have asbestos in your home or business give SERVPRO a call and we will come out and check for you!

Cause of loss in a local business.

If your business is going on holiday or extended break, making sure your commercial property in Vero Beach is safe from potential water damage hazards is vital. Without anyone there to immediately act on an issue that requires water pipe repair, a flooding problem can spiral out of control. Following these three tips can make coming back from a leisurely break to a flooded workplace unlikely.

1. Check the Water Supply Lines

Everything that uses water should be inspected. Businesses have many things that use the water lines and should be evaluated:

• Refrigerators
• Toilets
• Sinks
• Dishwashers
• Ice makers
• Washing machines

With a flashlight, check the attached cords for cracks or breaks. If you see any problems, turn that specific shutoff valve off and arrange for water pipe repair when you are back.

2. Turn Off the Main Valve Before Leaving

If you have access, it is important to turn off the main valve to the water supply.

3. Inspect the Outside of the Property

The building’s downspout should be free of any debris to stop rainwater or snow melt from causing water damage. A simple check keeps the mechanism working towards keeping your business not flooded.

Water damage is scary, but it can be mitigated. If prevention isn’t adequate or water pipe repair is necessary upon return, reach out to trained professionals at SERVPRO.

Being mindful of ways to stop the water from flowing goes a long way to stop any problem from happening while away.

Air filter needing a change.

Businesses all around the Vero Beach area should be thinking deeper about cleanings.  Most companies have nightly cleaning service or even day porters, but with the increase of infectious diseases, everyone should be thinking DEEPER CLEAN.

Some interesting facts to back up this notion:

Fact: C. Diff has killed more people than Ebola and can live outside the body for 70-90 days.

Fact: Tuberculosis is one of the fastest growing communicable diseases in the world.

Fact: This flu season 48 states had high levels of flu activity

Locals are concerned about staying healthy and thinking about all the places that germs might be lurking.  Where do you go on a daily basis? The grocery store, work, restaurants, the gym, movie theater, schools or the mall might be a part of your travels.  These busy populated places can be breading grounds for infectious diseases.

If you work or own a business in the area you can call SERVPRO of Vero Beach for a deep clean/sanitization estimate.  Our services can get to that deeper level than surface clean.

Clubhouse Leak

12/20/2017 (Permalink)

A pipe in the ceiling ruptured, flooding out clubhouse.

Water is not a benign substance when it fills up spaces. Many building materials begin a devastating deterioration cycle after a soaking. Wood swells, absorbing the water and becoming distorted in shape. Metal rusts and pressed wood and paper products, commonly used as walls, ceilings, and trim, literally dissolve. As the structure of the building materials changes, they weaken and become unable to performs the jobs expected of them. Supporting walls bend, walls crumble, and flooring sags, warps, and buckles.

SERVPRO technicians are highly trained in the skill sets needed to remove all traces of excess water to restore the strength and integrity of waterlogged building materials. We start with a straightforward process -- pumping and extracting the standing water out of all the spaces in your business. Our pumps work even underwater, and high-efficiency extractors pull water out of carpeting, corners, and hidden recesses.

Expect our work crews to monitor moisture levels and use advanced scanning technology to locate water hiding behind walls and in the cells of cinder block foundations. All water must evacuate, or your home is at risk of secondary damage.  Once the standing and trapped water is removed, we move on to drying residual moisture out of the structure and contents of the business. Industrial strength air movers and dehumidifiers positioned throughout the flooded area continue to reduce moisture levels until the targets determined by our technicians are met.

SERVPRO VERO BEACH was called out to an emergency water call at a clubhouse in a commercial building. The picture shows the cause of the loss.  Within two hours, the place was drying and the surrounding buildings did not even know an emergency had occurred.

Understanding Water Types

12/20/2017 (Permalink)

Water from outside entered the restaurant leaving contaminates along the way.

When your home or business suffers a water damage, understanding what type of water you are dealing with is critical to ensuring proper cleanup.

There are three types of water. Clean water is water from a broken pipe, or other water source; rainwater is also considered clean.  The term gray water is used to classify slightly contaminated water.  Clean water becomes gray water when it is left untreated allowing bacteria and other contaminants to begin growing, making the water hazardous.  Black water is highly contaminated and filled with fungi, bacteria, chemicals and more.  Black water is typically caused by sewage damage, flooding or any type of natural disaster.  Black water should always be handled by trained professionals.

Consider taking the following precautions to help minimize damage or prevent further damage while waiting for help to arrive.

Damage from Clean Water

  • Shut off the water source if possible or contact a qualified professional to do so.
  • Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building if access to the power distribution panel is safe from potential electrical shock. Do not enter rooms with standing water, as electrical shock hazards may exist.
  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting. Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions to allow more even drying.
  • Move any paintings, are objects, computers, documents and other valuable items that may be sensitive to moisture to a safe place.
  • Do not leave books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors as they may cause staining.
  • Do not use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water as there is potential for electrical shock or causing damage to the vacuum cleaner.
  • Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet; do not enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

Damage from Contaminated Water

  • Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by sewage. Wash your hands thoroughly if you come in contact with contaminated items.
  • Do not walk through contaminated areas, as you could spread damage to unaffected areas.
  • Do not turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air.
  • Do not use household fans to dry the structure, air flow could spread contaminants.
  • Discard any food and/or products for personal hygiene and cleanliness if exposed to the contaminated areas.SERVPRO’s network of more than 1,700 Franchises is ready to help in the event a fire, water, or mold loss occurs
  • Call on a restoration system serving insurance companies and their insureds, as well as thousands of commercial property owners in North America. Don’t leave your property to chance.
