What is a Soot Tag?

As fire restoration specialists, SERVPRO of Vero Beach has restored many fire damaged properties over the years. The extent of the damage can sometimes be very obvious and other times it is not-especially in instances when the damage is in the attics or trapped between walls where it is unseen until we dig in with our inspection.
One of the most common visible markers of fire damage are the black soot tags that seem to spring out of nowhere after a fire. Clients often assume soot tags are spider webs that have soot settled on them. However, these black “spider webs” are not actually related to spiders at all. Soot tags form when petroleum/synthetic based sources burn in areas of low circulation. During a fire, the heat produced moves into cooler areas since the air is seeking to create equilibrium. This causes the soot particles to follow the heat into the cooler areas with low circulation. Since soot is a product of combustion, the particles themselves are charged which makes it quite easy for them to create long chains of soot.
