Types of Smoke and the Soot They Create

wall and ceiling covered in soot from a fire. Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Vero Beach Home.

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can settle into even the smallest crevices of your home, leading to hidden damage and lingering odors. SERVPRO of Vero Beach’s extensive experience with smoke and soot damage allows us to accurately assess the extent of the damage in order to develop a comprehensive plan of action. Certain factors during a fire cause it to yield different types of smoke/residue. Each type of smoke creates different types of soot residue. Before restoration begins, our technicians will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Some examples of wet and dry smoke include:

  • Wet Smoke- Created by low-heat, smoldering fires. Both plastic and rubber produce this waste when they are burned. They tend to have fewer flames but much more thick, black smoke than their dry counterparts. Smears when being wiped because wet smoke residue is sticky and dense.
  • Dry Smoke – Created by fast-burning, high-temperature fires that are typically fueled by paper or wood. Its powdery texture means it doesn’t smear when being wipe.
  • Fuel/Oil Smoke- Leaves behind petroleum residue which is sticky, dense, and especially difficult to clean. Its odor is strong and offensive, easily ruining upholstered pieces of furniture when not cleaned promptly.
  • Protein Smoke- Created when organic material evaporates during a low-heat fire. Smoke damage is essentially invisible with no noticeable soot or streaking, but it can permanently discolor painted, varnished, or other finished surfaces.

Since every smoke and fire damage loss is unique, each job requires a unique restoration plan. SERVPRO of Vero Beach has the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage “Like it never even happened.” If you have any questions about fire, smoke, or soot damage, call us today at (772)770-0501.
