Tornado Safety in Vero Beach, FL
11/1/2020 (Permalink)
According to the National Weather Service Florida, has the second highest average tornado count per year compared to the rest of the country. Florida’s tornadoes tend to be less destructive than the tornadoes produced in the infamous “Tornado Alley”. However, it is still important to have a safety plan in place in case you find yourself in the path of a tornado. Typically, a tornado warning is given when a funnel is indicated by radar or sighted. You should take shelter IMMEDIATELY. Some things to keep in mind when finding shelter shelters are:
- Avoid windows- flying glass can injure or worse, kill. Also, do not waste time opening windows. It is a myth that the home will “explode” if you don’t open the windows.
- Shelter low- find a spot in the lowest floor possible, basements are not common in Florida, but ideal for tornadoes. Try to find a small room in the center of the structure with no windows. Perhaps a closet or bathroom.
- Add protection- shelter under something like a mattress or blanket to protect yourself from debris.
- Do not stay in a mobile home, they cannot withstand tornado force winds, even with secure tie-downs. It’s safer to lie flat in a ditch or ravine and put your arms over your head. This applies if you are in a vehicle as well.
By following these suggested safety tips, you can increase your chances for survival. If you experience any property damage, we’re here to help.
