Wood flooring with damage from a wet area rug. These are specialized mats used to dry out wood flooring.

From a mitigation perspective, water is one of the biggest enemies of hardwood floors. After a water loss, your best chance of salvaging wood flooring is to hire a professional restoration company immediately. However, daily moisture and spills can also cause damage to wood flooring if you failing to protect them properly. Some steps you can take to prevent damage include:

  • Removing damp or moist items such as towels, clothes, shoes, or appliances from contact with the floor as quickly as possible.
  • Immediately wiping up any spills before any liquid penetrates the floors.
  • Installing a thermostat that controls the humidity in your home. Both moist and dry air can affect wood flooring. A humidity controlling thermostat will help keep your humidity regulated year round.
  • Reapply sealants on your floors. A wax based sealant should be applied annually. Polyurethane sealants (both oil and water based) can be reapplied every few years.

Taking this steps will help with the longevity of your wood floors. However, from time to time events we don’t anticipate can happen. If you experience any water, fire, or mold damage to your wood flooring give our office a call. We are available 24/7.
