Flooring: To Salvage or Replace?
9/18/2020 (Permalink)
One of the most common questions we get when we arrive to a water loss is “Do you think the floors are salvageable?”. The answer is not always so cut and dry. There are many factors that go into deciding whether we salvage or remove flooring. Some of these factors are:
- Type of flooring- For example, vinyl and tile are much more resilient to water damage than wood or laminate.
- Signs of damage- Buckling, cupping, cracks, discoloration, odors, or mold are just a few things we look for.
- Subflooring- If water has seeped into the subflooring, we will most likely need to remove the flooring to ensure the subfloor is completely dried out. This will prevent future mold growth.
- Water Contamination- Your safety is the upmost importance to us. If the water is contaminated (such as sewage) it is usually safest to replace.
- Ease of repair or replacement- Sometimes the damage doesn’t affect an entire area of flooring. If the floor can be easily matched we will try to salvage as much of the floor as possible.
