Spotting Signs of Water Damage
4/23/2020 (Permalink)
Usually something obvious, like a burst pipe, comes to mind when you think of what would cause water damage. However, it’s not always so obvious--sometimes water damage can come from an unsuspected source. The signs can often go unnoticed until it becomes more catastrophic. Some of the signs to keep an eye out for and pay attention to are:
- Rust Stains-This can be a sign of corrosion in a pipe or gutter. Example: Rust stains on the floor behind a toilet can signal that the components of the toilet are corroding and need to be replace before they completely give out and cause potential flooding.
- Mold-Mold requires a source of water to grow. Sometimes the source can be direct like a leaky pipe behind drywall or it can be indirect such as high humidity levels from a major leak in another part of the home. Either way, it only takes 2 days for mold to begin growing after a water loss. It is important to remediate mold and its source properly to prevent a more major problem.
- Smells-Often a musky odor is a sign of stagnant water or even mold beginning to grow. If you smell something is off and can’t find the source a professional remediator company can use specialized tools to find “hidden leaks”.
